This is the latest translation I have undertaken. Ever since the time of the 11th century scholar, Abu Hamid al-Ghazali, Imam al-Ghazali, wrote his monumental pioneering work: “The Revival of Islamic Knowledge”, no other Muslim thinker has undertaken an interpretation of salat with such intellectual rigour and sensitivity. Turabi, like al-Ghazali in his time, was daring and controversial, and a fine thinker. He, arguably, remains today one of the most influential theologians in Islam, of the last millennium. In this study, Turabi has produced a formidable dissertation that goes deep into the heart of the subject of salat, that represents the clockwork inside the structure, activities and actions of Muslim life, and whose woeful neglect is the greatest loss facing the people of Islam. Translating Turabi, however, is a challenge, that is both inspiring and enjoyable to the translator.
